All students admitted to our Ph.D. program receive financial aid in the form of a tuition waiver and a Graduate Teaching Fellow stipend. The stipend is approximately $12,000 for a nine-month period and requires the student to serve approximately 640 hours as a research assistant, teaching assistant or classroom teacher. The amount of the stipend varies by a few hundred dollars depending on whether an incoming student has earned a graduate degree. Students making satisfactory progress receive financial support for at least four years in the Ph.D. program. Summer term financial support is also available.
Back to top 3. Should I have or be about to receive a graduate degree before entering the Ph.D. program?
A graduate degree is helpful, but not necessary. Students' programs of study in our Ph.D. program can vary according to their previous course work and preparation. However, over the years we have had several students successfully complete our Ph.D. program with only an undergraduate degree in hand at the time they entered the program.
Back to top 4. Do you accept foreign students into the program?
Yes, approximately one-half our Ph.D. students come from countries other than the U.S
5. I am an international student who
has studied at a U.S. university. Do I need to submit a TOEFL (Test of English
as a Foreign Language) score? Do I need to submit a TSE (Test of Spoken English)
score?
At the time of your application you need to submit a TOEFL score, but not a TSE score. The TSE may be taken at the time of arrival to begin the Ph.D. program. The TOEFL score should be 600 or higher (250 or higher on the computer based version or 100 or higher on the internet based version of the exam). A TOEFL score is good for two years.
Back to top 6. How many students enter the Ph.D. program each year?
On average, two students enter in each of the areas of Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing.
7. What is the minimum GMAT score for admission into the program?
Applicants should have an overall GMAT score of 600 or higher. Over the past few years the median GMAT score of accepted applicants is approximately 675.
9. I am interested in obtaining a Ph.D. to augment my consulting credentials and to teach college level business classes. I am not interested in making the commitment required to do rigorous, original research after completing the Ph.D. program. Is your Ph.D. program a good fit for me?
No. Our program is designed to develop students to become scholars who are effective as both researchers and teachers in an academic setting.
10. What time commitment is required to succeed in your Ph.D. program? How many years should it take to complete the degree requirements for a Ph.D.?
Students must put in very long hours to successfully complete their course work and other degree requirements. Expect to work 60 hours or more a week throughout most of the calendar year. Our program is designed to be completed in four or five years.
11. Do I need to know in what area I will do my thesis research before applying to or entering the Ph.D. program?
No. It is normal not to have specific research interests before entering the program. An important part of the development of a Ph.D. student is to learn what is known and where important unresolved issues lie in one's field of study.
12. How do your Ph.D. students develop the skills necessary to be an effective classroom teacher?
All of our students teach a total of four undergraduate classes during the
third and fourth years in the Ph.D. program. Before taking on the responsibility
for a course, Ph.D. students serve as teaching assistants to faculty members
and observe faculty teaching the course they will teach. They also attend seminars
on effective teaching and utilize the services of consultants in the University's
Teaching Effectiveness Program.
