Why study information systems?

Students in the information systems field focus on the formidable information challenges faced by typical businesses. Therefore, MIS programs emphasize how information technology can support business requirements, and on the appropriate design of business information systems. In essence, the focal point is on understanding what can be done with computer technology to enhance business efficiency.

An information system is any combination of people, hardware, software, communications networks, and data resources that collects, transforms, and disseminates information in an organization. Information systems and information technologies (including e-business and e-commerce technologies and applications) have become a vital component of successful businesses and organizations. They thus constitute an essential field of study in business administration and management. Since you probably intend to be a manager, entrepreneur, or business professional, it is just as important to have a good understanding of information systems as it is to understand any other functional area in business (i.e. accounting, finance, or marketing).

Why study operations management?

Operations management is the business function that plans, coordinates, and controls the resources needed to produce a company’s products and services. Operations management is the central core function of every company. Regardless of whether your area of expertise is marketing, finance, MIS, or operations, the techniques and concepts of operations management will help you in your business career. Knowledge of operations management will allow your company to offer products and services cheaper, better, and faster.
