Searching for Jobs Online

In the beginning there was the internet. The internet grew and expanded, and information overload ensued. There are now more choices for the job seeker on the web than ever before: Monster, Career Builder, Yahoo! Hot Jobs, JobDango, America’s Job Bank, not to mention online classifieds, blogs, and professional organizations. So how do you find the best jobs and save valuable search time in the process?

Two websites have helped to cut through the noise. The first is Job Board Reviews, an online directory which lists hundreds of job databases (organized by occupation and industry) and gives them ratings. The second is Indeed, which heralds the slogan, “One search. All jobs.” It’s a meta-search engine that compiles electronic postings from just about every other website. It’s simple interface makes it easy to use and it’s exhaustive listings gives you the confidence that you’re just about everything that’s out there.

Keep in mind that the internet isn’t the end-all, be-all of job search strategies.  Make sure you’re finding those other ways to make connections with employers–informational interviews, networking events, professional associations, etc.  Contact LCB Career Services if you’d like help with your search: 541-346-3301.

Thwarted by the “Experience Trap”?

It’s the classic catch-22… you need experience to get a job, but how can you get experience without having a job? With student loans, rent, and increasing food and gas prices, it’s a problem you wish you had the answer to.

One way you can get some great business experience, see several companies from the inside, and raise your visibility with those organizations you want to work for is to temp. I know, I know… it doesn’t sound very glamorous. But look at Ryan from The Office
alright, bad example.

But think about it from the employer’s perspective. By using an employment agency, they get to test drive their work force before committing to the cost and energy of hiring them permanently.

While adding to your resume (and bank account!), you get to show them how valuable you are and how they can’t live without you.

Below are some employment agencies operating in the Portland area that we’ve had positive interactions with, but finding an agency in your city of choice is just a Google search away.

Boly-Welch
Ajilon Finance
CampusPoint
Accountemps

** A word of caution… Employers pay the agency to recruit and screen their new hires. You shouldn’t have to pay anything to submit your resume, interview, or to start working.
